There are different ways to get your tongue in the proper position so I would suggest looking up different mewing techniques and choosing which one you like the most. For the breathing part, it could be because you are not used to breathing through your nose or not mewing correctly if it's the latter you can just look it up but if it's the first then I think it's best for you to learn how to breathe through your nose before you actually start mewing.

Edit: I forgot to put an example of one those techniques, so here is one.
First - you put the tip of you tongue on the roof of you mouth just a little bit behind your teeth.
Second - flatten out your tongue while it's on the roof of your mouth.
Third - you put your teeth together and then also your lips (don't bite hard or press your lips really hard together bcs that just looks dumb)
Fourth - Swallow a couple of times while you maintain your tongue posture to get a sort of suction hold where you don't "actively" have to press your tongue up
